What is TCM / Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine ?

Oriental Medicine, also called Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is a complete medical
system that has been in existence for thousands of years.  Acupuncture is the insertion
of fine hair-like needles into specific points or areas of the body in an attempt to treat
bodily dysfunction or disease, to modify or prevent pain perception, and to normalize the
body's physiological functions.

According to TCM theory, normal health is maintain when essential energy called Qi can
flow freely throughout the body.  Qi flows in channels called meridians.  If there is a
"blockage" in the normal flow of Qi, disease may result.  It is believed that Acupuncture
can restore the normal flow of Qi and thereby restore health to the body.

It is thought that the art of Acupuncture was started by the use of Ashi or painful points.
Bones, sharpened stones, or bamboo were inserted at certain points and found to give
relief.  Over the next few centuries, the system of points was refined and continues to the
present day.
What conditions can Acupuncture treat effectively ?

Historically, acupuncture has been used successfully to treat a wide variety of
conditions, including:

  • Acute and Chronic Pain

  • Gastrointestinal Disorders

  • Headaches and Migraines

  • Insomnia and Stress Reduction

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Colds and Flu

  • Weight Loss

  • Smoking Cessation

  • Fatigue/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  • Neurological Problems and Stroke Recovery

  • Skin problems, wrinkles and uneven complexion

In addition, The World Health Organization (WHO) has determined that acupuncture
is useful for many more conditions.  A more complete list can be found by clicking on

Philosophy on wellness

My philosophy on health and wellness used to be fairly simplistic; that was, if you weren’t
sick, you were well -- right?  However, after studying TCM and other complementary
therapies for the past 6 years, I have learned there’s much more than just being free
from disease to be truly “well”.

TCM takes a comprehensive approach to wellness, and integrates your physical, mental
and emotional components which allows me to treat the “root” of problems, rather than
just treating the symptoms or “branch”, as do most allopathic medicines.

True wellness is a state of being at your maximum physically, mentally and emotionally
,
yet in balance with enthusiasm and energy to face every day.
